Frequently Asked Questions – Cole Septic Service

At Cole Septic Service, we understand that maintaining your septic system can raise many questions. Our team is here to provide clear, concise answers to help you keep your system running smoothly.

Why is my high-water alarm sounding?

If your high-water alarm is activated, it typically indicates that the lift station pump isn’t operating correctly. Possible causes include a malfunctioning pump, a faulty float switch, electrical issues, or other component failure preventing the pump from activating. If you notice water levels above the pump in your lift station, it’s a sign that the system isn’t pumping as it should.

What are the signs of a failing septic system?

Indicators of a failing system include:

  • Wet areas or effluent surfacing in your leach field
  • Gurgling sounds or slow drains
  • Difficulty flushing toilets
  • Unpleasant septic odors
  • Unusually green or lush grass over the drain field

If you observe any of these signs, contact us promptly for an inspection.

Why are my drains gurgling?

Gurgling drains often point to a clogged main line or an overfull septic tank. In some cases, improper venting can also cause this issue. It’s essential to address these symptoms early to prevent more significant problems.

How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

We recommend pumping your septic tank every 2 to 3 years. However, if you use a garbage disposal frequently, consider pumping every 1 to 2 years. Older systems or those with higher usage may require more frequent maintenance.

What is the typical lifespan of a septic system?

A well-designed and properly maintained septic system can last between 20 to 30 years. Factors influencing longevity include system design, soil conditions, installation quality, usage patterns, and regular maintenance.

How close do you need to get to the septic tank for service?

Our service trucks are equipped with hoses reaching up to 200 feet. If your tank is located further away, additional hose length can be arranged, possibly at an extra cost.

Can I use a garbage disposal with my septic system?

While it’s possible, we advise against frequent use of garbage disposals. They introduce food particles and grease that don’t break down easily, leading to more frequent pumping and potential system issues.

Is it safe to plant trees near my septic system?

Avoid planting trees or shrubs with extensive root systems within 10 feet of your septic tank or leach field. Roots can infiltrate and damage the system. Also, steer clear of planting thorny vegetation near access points to ensure safe and easy maintenance.

Can I flush wet wipes?

No. Even if labeled “flushable,” wet wipes can cause blockages, damage equipment like aerators or pumps, and lead to more frequent tank pumping. Dispose of them in the trash instead.

Is it okay to drive over my leach field?

Driving vehicles heavier than a lawn mower over your leach field is not recommended. Heavy equipment can compact the soil, create ruts, and damage the underground piping, especially when the ground is wet.
